Desperately Seeking Susan: Ana Maria Orozco

While the Filipinos are enjoying the local version of Betty La Fea, the Columbians/Latinos are currently hooked with Latin American version of the U.S. television series "Desperate Housewives. The cast is headed by Colombia's Ana Maria Orozco, who is famous for playing Beatriz Pinzon (aka Betty) in the popular Colombian soap opera "Betty, la fea" (Ugly Betty) and now returns to this genre to play the role of Susana Martinez, popularized by Teri Hatcher in US version.

It is a program for adults about the lives of several Colombians in Argentina and, like the U.S. series on which it is based, focuses on the female characters. In the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Manzanares, Alicia will become friends with the other neighborhood wives - played by Argentine-Colombian Geraldine Zivic, Argentina's Lorena Meritano, Ecuador's Marisol Romero, Venezuela's Ruddy Rodriguez and Orozco. Alicia dies, but her spirit continues on to narrate the happenings in the lives of her friends.


Julián Arango, who originally played Hugo Lombardi in Yo Soy Betty La Fea, is also part of the cast as Tomás Salgari, the Doug Savant character (Tom Scavo). Ana María Orozco and Julián Arango were married before and they went through a divorce during the run of Betty series. Perhaps some of their real-life animosity helped to make that of their characters seem more authentic.
